Menopause Rating Scale (MRS)
The Menopause Rating Scale is a validated 11-item questionnaire used worldwide to quantify menopause symptom burden. It measures how much each symptom bothers you — not just whether it is present — which is what makes it useful for tracking change over time.
What it measures
The scale covers three domains. Somatic: hot flushes, sweating, heart discomfort, sleep problems, joint and muscle discomfort. Psychological: depressed mood, irritability, anxiety, physical and mental exhaustion. Urogenital: sexual problems, bladder problems, vaginal dryness.
How scoring works
Each symptom is rated from 0 (none) to 4 (very severe). The total and sub-scores map to severity bands, and repeated scoring shows whether symptoms are improving, stable or worsening — before and after any treatment or lifestyle change.
Use it the right way
Take the MRS every few weeks, not once. The trend matters more than a single snapshot. Bring the results to your appointment — a structured score carries more weight than a verbal description of symptoms, and it gives your clinician a baseline to monitor treatment against.
Common questions
Is the MRS a diagnosis?
No. It is a symptom-assessment tool. Diagnosis of menopause is clinical and usually based on symptoms and cycle history in the relevant age group; blood tests are not always needed.
How long does it take?
About two minutes. Your answers are stored locally on your device.
